feet receiving reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a form of complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet. Reflexology has roots in ancient practices, with evidence of similar techniques being used in China and Egypt thousands of years ago. Modern reflexology, as practised today, was developed in the early 20th century.
It's important to note that reflexology is not a substitute for conventional medical treatment, and you should always consult a Doctor about any health issues or concerns.

How Does it Work?

There are a few theories....

The reflexologist's application of pressure to the feet sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves in these extremities to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level. This enhances overall relaxation, brings internal organs and their systems into a state of optimum functioning, and increases blood supply (which brings additional oxygen and nutrients to cells and enhances waste removal).

Reflexology has been shown in research to positively affect the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, immune, and neurological systems in the body.

Another theory is that reflexology reduces pain by simply reducing stress and improving mood. We feel pain more when we are tense and stressed so by reducing these and entering a state of relaxation, our pain lessens.

Energy flow theory is similar to that of acupuncture. This is the idea of energy flow within the body, similar to concepts in traditional Chinese medicine like "Qi" (life energy). Disruptions in this energy flow are thought to cause illness. Reflexologists believe that by stimulating reflex points, they can help restore balance and promote the free flow of energy, which can aid in healing.
