Reflexology Shown to Help with Constipation
It may be a little embarrassing, but constipation is extremely common in babies, children and adults. In fact, the NHS estimates that around one in every seven adults and up to one-third of children in the UK has constipation at any one time.
As with many complaints, constipation effects twice as many women as men, and can be even more common in older adults and during pregnancy.
Reflexology could help those with discomfort from constipation.
One study was a randomised clinical trial conducted at the private nursing home in the Ankara Province. At the nursing home, 60 eligible elderly people were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received foot reflexology massage for 1 month three times per week for 30 min. Those in the control group were given a foot surface massage without pressure for the same time. Scores were taken before and after reflexology for both groups.
Reflexology was found to improve the quality of life of the elderly and decrease the severity of constipation, increasing the frequency of bowel movements.
